Eligibility for Citizenship

United States citizenship can be acquired either at birth or after birth, based on specific criteria.

Citizenship at Birth:

  • Born in the United States
  • Parents who were citizens of the United States at the time of the applicant’s birth

Citizenship after Birth:

  • Application through parent(s) who are United States citizens before turning 18
  • Naturalization process after turning 18

Eligibility for Naturalization: Individuals eligible to apply for Naturalization include:

  • Permanent residents for 5 or more years
  • Permanent residents for 3 or more years, married to a United States citizen
  • Those with qualifying service in the United States armed forces
  • Children of United States citizens born outside the United States, residing outside the country

General Requirements for Naturalization:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Continuous physical residency in the United States as a permanent resident for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a US citizen)
  • Good moral character in both the United States and their country of origin
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English
  • Basic knowledge of United States history, government, and the Constitution

Skills such as English proficiency and knowledge of US history and government are assessed through a Naturalization Test during the applicant’s interview with a USCIS officer.

Application for Certificate of Citizenship (N-600):

  • For those born outside the United States to a US citizen parent
  • For individuals who automatically became citizens before turning 18
  • Not a request to become a US citizen but to obtain a Certificate of Citizenship

Application for Acquisition of Citizenship (N-600K):

  • For children regularly residing in a foreign country
  • Criteria include being unmarried, being in legal and physical custody of the US citizen parent, and meeting specific presence requirements
