F-1 (Student) Visas

F-1 (Student) Visas

If you aspire to pursue full-time studies in the United States, obtaining a student visa is essential. The F and M visas are the primary nonimmigrant visa categories for individuals seeking educational opportunities in the U.S.

To be eligible for entry under the F-1 or M-1 visa categories, you must fulfill the following criteria:

  • Enrolled in an academic, language-training, or vocational program
  • Admission to a school approved by the Student and Exchange Visitors Program (SEVP)
  • Full-time enrollment status at the institution
  • Proficiency in English or enrollment in English proficiency courses
  • Adequate funds to cover your expenses throughout the duration of your study
  • Intent to maintain a residence abroad without any plans to relinquish it

F-1 Student Visa:

The F-1 Visa (Academic Student) enables you to enter the U.S. as a full-time student at an accredited educational institution offering degree, diploma, or certificate programs. Eligible institutions include colleges, universities, seminaries, conservatories, academic high schools, elementary schools, and language training programs authorized by the U.S. government to accept international students.

M-1 Student Visa:

The M-1 Visa (Vocational Student) is designed for students enrolled in vocational or nonacademic programs, excluding language training.

Validity:

The duration of the student visa may exceed the length of the academic program but remains contingent upon the program specified in the I-20 form issued by the school.

Employment:

F-1 students are generally restricted from off-campus employment during the first academic year but may engage in on-campus employment with certain limitations. Following the initial academic year, F-1 students can pursue off-campus employment through Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT), or STEM OPT Extension. M-1 students may engage in practical training post-completion of their studies.

Family Members:

Family members of F-1 or M-1 visa holders can accompany their student spouse or parent to the U.S. but are not authorized to work.

Jurisdiction:

To obtain F-1 status, applicants must obtain an I-20 form from an accredited college or university they have been accepted to and process their status through the nearest U.S. Consulate. The process for M-1 status follows a similar route, with applicants obtaining the I-20 form from a vocational or trade school.

Since student visas confer nonimmigrant status, holders must maintain their intent to depart the U.S. and return to their home country upon termination of their status.
